Elina Brotherus, born 1972 in Helsinki, Finland, works in photography and video. Her early work delt with subjective yet universal experiences, the presence and absence of love. She then took distance from the autobiographical approach with her next series: In The New Painting, introducing geometrical landscapes and studies of the human figure, Brotherus probes the relation of photography to art history and finds inspiration in the iconography of classical painting. Her current work, Artist and her Model, is centered on the relation of the figure and space, and on the gaze of an artist on his/her model.
Elina Brotherus has an MA in photography from the University of Art and Design Helsinki. She has exhibited since 1997, recently at the Biennial pf Photography and Visual Arts of Liège, Belgium; Momentum, the Nordic Biennial, Norway; MAXXI Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo, Rome; Bloomberg SPACE, London; and The National Art Center, Tokyo, to name a few. She has been awarded the Prix Niépce of Gens d’Image, France; Finnish State Prize for Photography; Carnegie Award’s Young Artist’s Scolarship; and the Prix Mosaïque of Centre National de l’Audiovisuel, Luxembourg.
